TRAVEL TECH: USING AUCTION WEBSITES
You can find some deals using auction websites for car rentals and hotel rooms, but cheap airfares may be a thing of the past.
BY ARTHUR FROMMER
King Features Syndicate

Going, going -- and you're gone

Have you ever used an auction website in travel? They can be quite effective if you know the narrow areas in which they excel.

The two most famous auction websites are Priceline.com and Hotwire.com. Both are ''opaque'' sites, meaning that you do not know the identity of the airline, car rental firm or hotel for which you are bidding. You simply name a price you're willing to pay for a service on a particular date -- and then hope for the best.

There was a time when Priceline and Hotwire snared tremendous discounts on airfares, but that happens much less frequently today. The airlines are flying with such high-load factors, crammed with passengers who occupy every seat, that they are far less willing than in the past to offer heavy discounts for customers of Priceline or Hotwire. It sometimes happens, but far less often than before.

For car rentals and hotel rooms, however, both of the opaque services remain effective. Priceline recently conducted a nationwide sale of rental cars going for as little as $12 a day (for a compact). And I've stayed at Priceline- or Hotwire-acquired hotels in Boston and San Francisco for a fraction of their normal published rates.

One key to making an effective use of Priceline.com is to precede your search with a look at Biddingfortravel.com. That remarkable service contains messages from people who have successfully and recently used Priceline.com for a hotel or car, in which they reveal the bid (that is, the price) that worked for them.

If you are in the market for a luxury hotel, you might also use an ''open auction'' luxury site, like Luxurylink.com or SkyAuction.com (the latter offering all categories of travel, luxury and otherwise), which lets you choose the specific hotel in which you're interested. Be careful to look out for fees or surcharges before you commit. And if you don't find what you want at the price you're willing to pay, you can then return to Priceline or Hotwire.

Early Bird Gets the best rates

Originally published May 28, 2006
This is not the year to get lazy about making summer vacation plans. Airfares, gas, hotel rooms -- nearly every trip expense is going up. Except for occasional last-minute sales, travel experts agree, the sooner you book, the better the deal.

Nearly two-thirds of Americans this year are booking summer trips at least two to three months ahead, according to an online survey of 2,327 adults; 8 percent started more than six months ago. The survey was done April 5-7 by Harris Interactive on behalf of Expedia.com.

Costs are up
As for costs, this summer a family of two adults and two children can expect to spend an average of $261 per day for food and lodging, based on prices at more than 55,000 hotels and restaurants in AAA TourBook guides. Hotels will average $141 per night, up 9 percent from last year.

Some popular destinations will cost more. The most expensive state will be Hawaii, where a family of four will pay $599 per day for food and lodging. The per-day cost in Nevada and New York will be well over $300.

Tips to get Last Minute Travel Deal

Never fly on weekends

If you’re planning a trip, plan to leave on weekdays, preferable Monday to Wednesday. Weekends are high traffic times, for travelers and would probably cost you an additional $25-$40 increase.

Don’t travel During Peak season

Airlines tend to increase ticket prices during Peak travel season due to the increase in demand. Traveling during low season is also advantageous if you want to avoid airport and tourist spot crowds. If you really have to travel during peak season, consider leaving home early and going home late to avoid the rush.

How long to Stay

Yes your travel stay also affects airline ticket prices. Airlines give discounts if you stay at least a week at your destination and return within 90 days.

Consider a Connecting Flight

Contrary to popular belief, direct flights aren’t always the cheapest. Some people have saved up to $1000 dollars on booking connecting instead of Direct flights. If you don’t have a lot of luggage, and aren’t very particular with time, it is best, and a lot cheaper to book a connecting flight instead of direct.

Use the senior citizen discount

Some Airlines offer the same senior Citizen discount for the companions of the Senior Citizen. Ask if it’s available.

The Early Bird gets the Last Minute Travel Deal

Call Airlines at 12:01 am on Wednesday mornings. This is when airlines release all the new fares and seat plans. You can be first and choose the best and cheapest tickets at this time.

Shop in the Internet

The best feature of the internet is that you see all available Prices at a very convenient place, your home. You won’t have to canvass travel agencies. Some internet sites even offer internet only discounts that you can benefit from if you avail of their services.

When you do shop on the internet

Check first with travel agents regarding prices, Internet prices aren’t always cheap, it’s best to ask a good old travel agent.
